Langham Preschool Curriculum Overview

At Langham Pre-school, our curriculum is designed to nurture each child’s natural curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning. We adhere to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the seven areas of learning and development. Our approach is play-based, child-led, and tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of every child.

1. Communication and Language

* Focus: Developing listening, attention, understanding, and speaking skills.
* Activities: Daily story time, group discussions, show-and-tell, singing songs, and role-playing. We encourage children to express themselves clearly and confidently, expanding their vocabulary through rich and varied conversations.

2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development

* Focus: Building self-confidence, managing emotions, and developing positive relationships.
* Activities: Circle time to discuss feelings, collaborative games, role-playing social scenarios, and individual support for emotional regulation. We promote empathy, respect, and understanding of others’ perspectives.

3. Physical Development

* Focus: Enhancing gross and fine motor skills, promoting physical activity, and teaching healthy habits.
* Activities: Outdoor play with climbing frames and balls, indoor activities like dancing and yoga, fine motor tasks such as drawing, cutting, and building with blocks. We emphasize the importance of physical well-being and healthy eating.

4. Literacy

* Focus: Developing reading and writing skills through phonics, storytelling, and creative writing.
* Activities: Phonics games, letter recognition, reading aloud, creating storybooks, and writing practice. We foster a love of books and encourage children to explore the world of reading and writing.

5. Mathematics

* Focus: Exploring numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving skills through play-based activities.
* Activities: Counting games, shape sorting, using manipulatives, and solving simple math problems in real-life contexts. We make math fun and accessible, building a strong foundation for future learning.

6. Understanding the World

* Focus: Exploring the natural world, different cultures, and the local community through hands-on experiences.
* Activities: Nature walks, planting seeds, learning about different cultures, exploring different materials, and visiting local landmarks. We encourage curiosity and a sense of wonder about the world around them.

7. Expressive Arts and Design

* Focus: Fostering creativity, imagination, and self-expression through art, music, dance, and drama.
* Activities: Painting, drawing, singing, playing musical instruments, dancing, and creating artwork inspired by nature. We provide opportunities for children to express themselves freely and explore their artistic talents.

This curriculum is flexible and responsive, adapting to the children’s interests and needs to ensure a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child can thrive.
