This week we have continued our autumn theme with our autumn treasure that the children have kindly brought in. We discussed the various items, which plant they could have come from, and the many different colours and smells. We did leaf rubbings with large pencils in different colours, taking turns with the different shapes and textures of the leaves. A great sensory activity that the children were really involved with!
Another sensory activity that the children really engaged with was homemade kinetic sand, mixing 8 cups of plain flour with 1 cup of vegetable oil, some grated chalk to add flecks of colour and some sprinkles from the cooking cupboard. The children were able to use tools and creativity to make ‘cupcakes’ and ‘ice creams. We also filled the light table with some water, food colouring and a sprinkle of corn flour to make it cloudy, hiding small objects in the water and encouraging the children to pick them out using the tweezers. Another brilliant sensory tray that helps the children with their fine motor skills.
We had a delivery of new light up phones, these are very popular, and encourages speech and language between each other, with adult or playing solo, using the buttons for different sounds and colours, enabling descriptive chat for their favourite colours and sounds.
We continued to make our volcano, which we have painted, repainted, and have sealed with glue. The children are so proud with what they have created and had lots of imaginative games with the dinosaurs! More animal themed activities included a sensory farm tray and creating ‘zoos’ from Duplo.
We’ve now begun to make a pumpkin patch; we have painted some baby potatoes orange and we have decorated them with scary faces! We are looking forward to more spooky activities next week and expanding our pumpkin patch with other crafts!
Finally, we’ve finished off the week with our giant Polydrons, creating giant builds for the children to explore inside and out. We’ll leave these up for our children on Monday to play with!
